Advent Calendar 2023 Day 1: Today's The Day, 1997

Yeah, not quite, uploader. You know, we've been doing this Advent Calendar for eight years now, so just occasionally instead of wading through everything we've been backing up over the years we'd like someone to make things easier for us by dumping a horde of seasonal-contemporary TV clips and associated footage into one format. And here's the perfect vehicle, a festive version of Martyn Lewis' ultra-topical (in a manner of speaking) quiz about events of the day of broadcast, shown on BBC2 in the Catchword slot, i.e. the one BBC1 and ITV fight over for game show supremacy these days. Understandably there were a few festive specials during its six year run, including Eastenders vs Emmerdale in 1994 and two years later those classic adversaries The Goodies vs Bread. This appears to have been the last, with Lewis in Dickensian waistcoat overseeing heavy hitters of both cultural minutiae and pantomime, Roy Hudd and Amanda Barrie against Loyd Grossman and Lynda Barron, all of whom are introduced with footage of them in which they look slightly different, or in Hudd's case like, um, Rolf Harris.
